Twitch Streamer and YouTuber Broughy1322 has a series on YouTube which he has maintained since 2014. This series revolves testing vehicles within Grand Theft Auto Online (GTAO) for lap time and top speed. This was done to combat the misinformation that was spreading around the time, incorrectly attributing certain cars the “fastest car in the Supers class” or “the best car in the game”. With these testing videos, Broughy provides a scientific answer to which car is fastest around a balanced racing track, and which car have the highest top speed, both tested properly.
In 2022, Broughy had the idea to reboot this series in a newer format, and he contacted me to design an animation to introduce the series, combining both aspects of the lap time and top speed testing into one video. Below is an explainer of how I made this animation, but if you want to see the latest testing video on Broughy’s channel, it’s linked below!
The first half of the animation is about the lap time testing. There is a track map of the circuit Broughy uses to test: Cutting Coroners GP. This track is an evolution of the track created by Rockstar Games when the game came out in 2013. There was some inspiration from Formula One race animations, as usual! Let’s talk about the first layout.
The structure I chose was a mashup of Formula One and how Rockstar Games present community-made jobs on their Social Club website, with the box indicating the creator name, job title and job thumbnail. Below are scrolling text that shows all cars tested in this particular video in alphabetical order, information about the track length and turn count, and a call-to-action to visit Broughy’s website for more details on the lap time testing methodology.
With the track graphics in the background, the track gets drawn in sector by sector, the borders of which were decided by Broughy. He also picked the colour themes per sector to match his brand colours. Afterwards the camera transitions to a lower view, and the corner markers gradually gets shown in the video as the camera orbits the track slightly. To transition to the top speed section of the animation, the text background box gains full opacity and wipes to the right, and the background of the track transitions to the new location.
Text-wise, the scrolling text has continued from earlier, showing the end of the list of cars in the video. Similar to the lap time section of the video, the text for the top speed explains the top speed calculation as Distance / Time. Distance is calculated between checkpoint 1 (CP1) and CP2, which comes to 0.2 miles or 0.32 kilometres. Lastly, another call-to-action to visit Broughy’s website for more details on the top speed testing methodology. The track map in the background is more basic than the testing track, just showing a straight line with both ends, the “checkpoints” marked. The animation ends here.
